What We Found Interesting This Week

Aug 4, 2026 – Trimac Transportation is pleased to announce the acquisition of California Freight. Headquartered in Ripon, Calif., California Freight is one of California’s largest multi-faceted food-grade bulk logistics providers, operating eight trucking terminals, a warehousing terminal and brokerage facility across California and Nevada. (Trimac)

Trimac has now completed more than 20 transactions since 2019, including acquisitions of regional bulk specialists with terminals, tank-wash capabilities, and customer relationships that can’t be replicated simply by adding new trucks. California Freight fits that strategy, bringing 8 terminals across California and Nevada, more than 400,000 square feet of food-grade warehouse space in the San Joaquin Valley, and brokerage relationships built over 2 decades in dairy, wine, and beverage. The timing is what makes this deal interesting. ACT Research notes that the 2026 truckload market is experiencing a supply-driven recovery, with spot rates up ~43% YoY in June as capacity exits, driver scarcity, and tighter enforcement support pricing despite limited demand growth. In this environment, carriers with regulatory barriers to entry are better positioned. Sanitary transport requirements, tank-cleaning infrastructure, and shipper audit standards make it harder for new capacity to enter, helping these assets hold pricing better than dry van carriers. Vertical integration matters too, since owning warehousing alongside tanker operations gives Trimac a deeper position in customers’ supply chains. Coming out of the freight recession, this deal is indicative of capital seeking value in specialized and niche businesses with strong customer relationships and pricing power, rather than just adding scale in the lower-margin, more commoditized trucking sector.
